What about the Community of Caring?

I confess, I have not been able to report on the Morris Plains mayoral race in which long-time incumbent Frank Druetzler is being challenged by Mike Butchko.

Anyone out there know — will this be close?

I went to candidates night at the community center and was really impressed by Butchko. It seemed like he had a much firmer grasp of the issue of filling the office buildings on Route 53 when he talked about his business plan. Druetzler kind of stuttered whenever he had to answer a question about it and made it seem like he didn’t have a plan or that he didn’t have any responsibility to do anything about it.

Judging from the debate Thursday night (which was well attended), old #7 does not run the bases like he used to. Butchko clearly a better orator won the debate in a TKO over Druetzler. . At the age of 70, this election is clearly Druetzler’s “swan song.” The campaign has taken its toll on the Mayor and it shows, Butchko is about change. Uncle Frank claims that he can maintain services, keep taxes stable and maintain the status quo on services with declining ratables, decreased state aid, and the potential for decreased commercial tax revenue due to increased tax appeals from commercial properry owners. If he can do that his nickname should be Houdini. He is out walking the streets of Morris Plains with his “team” every night trying too hard to pull his relativelyy unknown running mate Councilman Ray Zabihach across the finish line. However the Dems have mounted a full fledged assault for the Council.race. The R’s have not challeged Jason Karr and Frank Mangravite has put together a compelliing and powerful campaign and has won over quite a few converts. This is a race to watch. The Dems have put together a very credible slate of candidates.
