Murray takes the plunge

Freeholder Jim Murray formally kicked off his write-in campaign for Morris County freeholder today at noon, declaring that he is the only candidate in the race dedicated to lower taxes, no layoffs and maintaining county services.

It sounds great, but there are times when layoffs are needed to keep taxes low. Murray, who declined to endorse any other candidates, said he would support once again reducing the open space tax, which now stands at 2 cents. In recent years, the freeholders have reduced it from 4 cents per $100 assessment.

In making his announcement, Murray was accompanied by a group of family and friends  — no other Republican officials were on hand. Clearly, Murray is on his own.
