Trouble at Rutgers?

This post has to do with sports and politics. Got a letter the other day from Jack Curtis. He is a one-time Republican alderman in Dover and an elementary school principal in Roxbury.
Referring to Gov. Christie’s condemnation of teacher salaries, Curtis wondered why the governor has not commented on the estimated $1.2 million (plus perks) received by Greg Schiano, the Rutgers football coach,
It’s not a bad question when you think about it. And when you realize that Schiano’s program seems to be stuck in a ditch, it’s a pretty good question.
It is true that Rutgers has gone to five bowl games in a row. But it’s not hard to go to bowl games anymore. In truth, ever since a great year in 2006 that saw the Scarlet Knights just miss going to the Orange Bowl, the team’s performance has been mediocre. And things have not started well this year – consider a recent home loss to Tulane (no great power) that dropped Rutgers to 2-2.
Curtis raises a good point.
Football brings more revenue and endowments to colleges than it spends. Curtis should really look into how many programs (sports and otherwise) that football supports.
Ted, that is contrary to most studies I have seen. Most football program lose money for their schools and fewer than two-dozen are profitable. Rutgers spent a $1 million more than Notre Dame last year.
A question for Fred. Is this coach still getting part of his pay from a vendor to the school? This was one of the things that drove Bob McCahy out.
Bob, name one study…or any study. I can tell you that the entire sports programs at most Big East schools are funded by the footbal team. At least when I attended a former Big East school (Boston College)
