Three cheers for the Nuns

Here’s an interesting tidbit from the AP:

Catholic nuns are urging Congress to pass President Barack Obama’s health
care plan, in an unusual public break with bishops who say it would subsidize abortion.

Some 60 leaders of religious orders representing 59,000 Catholic nuns Wednesday sent
lawmakers a letter urging them to pass the Senate health care bill. It contains restrictions on abortion funding that the bishops say don’t go far enough.

  1. Kevin Nedd says:

Isn’t it kind of ironic how male bishops are against the bill (over its abortion language), while female nuns are supportive?

  2. P says:

That’s the Catholic church, bishops say “no,” nuns say “yes.”

This statement also probably tells a lot –

“This is politics; this isn’t a question of faith and morals,” said Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Network, a national Catholic social activism lobby. “We are the ones who work every day with people who are suffering because they don’t have health care. We cannot turn our backs on them, so for us, health care reform is a faith-based response to human need.”

NETWORK—a Catholic leader in the global movement for justice and peace—educates, organizes and lobbies for economic and social transformation. Founded in 1971 by 47 Catholic sisters, NETWORK is supported by thousands of groups and individuals committed to working for social and economic justice. For more information, see .

  3. Miguel Gonzalez says:

Are you sure these are catholic nuns? Politics? Where is Caesar? Oops!

  4. Miguel Gonzalez says:

BTW, I did not see anything about prayer. You sure they’re catholic?

  5. Kay says:

They’re about as Catholic as the CCHD is.

  6. JS says:

Which constitutional definition of the seperation between church and state is Fred advocating for today? One day a spiritual person must not “force” his values in schools, three weeks later its acceptable to exploit a religious affiliation if it fits a shared idelogical end point?

    February 22, 2010
All we can say is that it’s of some comfort that the likely state education comissioner will not violate the law and the constitution by trying to force religion into the public schools.

  7. There’s a difference between just expressing an opinion and actually trying to implement policy on religious grounds …

But I’m glad to see that JS is keeping track of my writings,

  8. vicky haich says:

Every so called catholic that supports this goverment adminstration health care plan and every catholic that voted this adminstration in should be excommunicated from the church.Catholic that support abortion, euthanasia and gay rights are not with the church. Stay away from the Eucharist so not to embarrass the rest of us. Catholics are the backbone of this counrty. Us Catholic must stand up for the truth of what we believe, not being lukewarm. We must pray every day for the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit to guide us.
    In God We Trust!

  9. Giancarlo Taliente says:

My guess these are the same “nuns” that won’t wear habits, don’t live in community and refuse their vow of OBEDIENCE to the Church

  10. Excommunicated? I love Vicky’s open-minded approach to those who may disagree on an issue …
Then again, I thought the nun who made my life miserable when I was a young lad in CCD class should have been excommunicated … 🙂

  11. rosarotondi says:

May God have mercy on those nuns who are supporting the Obamacare. We have to forgive them because they don’t know what they are doing.

  12. LisaRo says:

Sorry, but any nuns that back the abortion-funding healthcare bill does not deserve the title “Catholic.” This is scandalous behavior.

  13. carmen says:

i wish that this woun’t make me so angry it’s energy lost, but isnt there a way we can get these people that call themself catholic and they do everything to bring the church down, to leave the church, why they want to be catholic is beyond me, they do not listen to the pope nor the bishops, all they do is give non catholic reason to critizise us more, the only thing that keeps me going is that i truly believe Jesus when he said, the gatesof hell will NOT prevail. so i encourage good abiding catholic to keep the faith and see you all when this is all over.

  14. Gus says:

What the nuns say does NOT overule the Bishops!!! These so called nuns must be a clueless bunch.

  15. Joellen says:

I too can say I am a NUN – however I am not. The Catholic Church has been INFESTED with COMMUNIST – Beware and Pray for the TRUE CHURCH!

  16. Texana says:

We will see, when it passes, that this bill is not so much a health care bill as a ‘control and depopulate” bill.

  17. Judy K says:

And we wonder why the Vatican has called for an investigation of the Religious Orders in the US!

  18. Tsepho says:

These nuns are the same ones who have refused to comply with the Vatican inquiry into women’s religious orders in the United States. They are, for the most part, Baby Boom generation radical feminists who have completely lost their Catholic Identity and Religious Charisms- all in the name of “equality” and “social justice.” They are stuck in the socialist movement of the 60’s, and have done so much damage to the Church- it is unbelievable.

Fortunately, these religious orders are not recruiting any new members, because they see how inauthentic they are. There are many new beautiful orders springing up, which are attracting young women- and they are very Holy, and faithful to the Church. We just have to wait for these other orders to fade away.

  19. linda adams says:

Rather than revamping the whole health system for every person, why not work on providing health care for the uninsured? Abortion is not health care!!!!!!!! Abortion is the killing of an unborn baby created in the image of God. Any law that allows abortion to occur is immoral and against God’s commandment. To overlook the killing of these babies so that there is universal health care is to commit a very grave error (sin). You are indirectly saying ok to the killing of unborn babies. You have sold your soul in the bargain. The nuns are not following the example of the Blessed Mother but rather the radical feminists. No cheers for them.

  20. james bakle says:

i respect these nuns for caring for the sick and poor and dying.god bless them.but this good work does not make it right to vote for a bill that pays for killing gods unborn children.god said i knew you even before you were born. please pray that these nuns will have a change of heart.

  21. Seamus says:

Dean Koontz hit the nail on the head when he wrote that modern “nuns” are merely social workers who don’t date. Those “nuns” who are not wearing habits, who are not praying, who do not live in community, and who are not faithful to the Church are not happy and their orders are dying out. Sad that over one million babies get sacrificed on the altar of convenience every year and these nuns seem to approve.

  22. Dan says:

It is also interesting to note these 60 leaders of 59000 nuns are of average age 65 and won’t be around in 10 years to poison the faith anymore. The only orders growing and infused with youth are vibrant, holy, habit-wearing orders faithful and obedient to the church – part of the new Springtime Pope JPII refereed to. These sickly orders will evaporate due to lack of new blood having built their houses on the shifting sands of new age, relativistic, pagan ideals – in otherwords, worldly liberalism embodied by the left today.

  23. Susanne says:

What an odd headline for a very sad story. Personally, I support equal rights for unborn women. Unfortunately, these rabid 60’s feminists pretending to be “nuns” have not thought things out that far.

  24. chris says:

What a scandal to the Church! These nuns are either ignorant of the contents of the health care plan, or they are simply not in compliance with the teachings of the Catholic Church on the sanctity of human life! May God have mercy on them!

  25. doug says:

not all nuns say yes to this one

Without the bishops, the nuns are meaningless.
Thats why there are so many are mean faced rainbow vest wearing socialists
crying for justice and peace but forgetting the unborn.

Mother Theresa continually and publicly decried abortion.
    That’s a nun.
These are detached social workers raging against the only thing that gives
them credibility – the Catholic Church

  26. Joe Dileo says:

These nuns are not catholic so please leave catholic out of your descriptions of praise. They are new age druids that have lost sight of thier faith and obediance to God. I only hope that they see in the light of thier faith that this bill is not in the best interest of this country as written.

  27. D says:

They are victims of modernism, and no longer believe in Catholic virtues and therefore are no longer Catholic. The Catholic Church is very clear where it stands on the issues involved, socialism, communism, euthanasia, and abortion. You can’t have 2 masters, you serve one or the other. Sacrificing the innocent to give a benefit to another is wrong; it makes it all about the money and not about human life.

  28. Marie says:

The orders these nuns come from are being visited and investigated by the Church because they espouse secular rather than moral doctrines. They are in danger of schism, so what they say isn’t reliable.

  29. L.Strasser says:

The nuns should be excommunicated. Pure and simple

  30. Jimmy O says:

Anyone Catholic could not morally approve the new health care bill which would promote the killing of unborn babies (ABORTION). The bishops have it right. Please do not refer to the Catholic faith supporting such a bill that would promote abortion.

True Catholic doctrine is clear: Abortion is murder.

  31. D. says:

The Vatican is quietly conducting “two sweeping investigations of American nuns, a development that has startled and dismayed nuns who fear they are the targets of a doctrinal inquisition,” reports Laurie Goodstein of The New York Times (July 1, 2009)

  32. P says:

This speaks volumes! These so-called Nuns are clearly in the wrong. The disconnect is tremendous from where the church stands to where these Nuns are. If this story is indeed true, there should be an investigation into the “why” behind this….

  33. P says:

Fred – Your site needs some type of authentication method. The Real P (me) did not post the comment above (#32). Please take it down, or change the author to “Not P”

  34. Annie says:

I was once a sister and at that time Abortion was a sin. How things have changed over the years. God help us .

  35. Lou Apa says:

    Dear Fellow Catholics;
These hospital nuns, or any hospital for profit, do not speak for the Catholic Church USA. This is the providence of the US Catholic Bishops, who have spoken against the ObamaCare plan. Greed and misplaced care for the poor are the operative factors for the hospitals, or colleges/universities, or so-called splinter Catholic groups!

  36. Mary says:

Nuns, what a joke. They are there for the free ride. They are not nuns.

  37. Simon Peter says:

Know your source. If an organization claims to be catholic but does not follow church teaching, the Vatican, or the bishops then the word catholic is being used as a means to an end. Obamacare keeps being rejected and keeps coming back. If only this much effort was put into making our government make sense and work for the people and not itself. This bill is against the church, all Christians, and all life. No true Catholic is for it. Any that claim they are for it are mislead or misleading. Abortion is wrong. Obamacare is wrong. Don’t look for your faith to fit your life and give you the answers you want. Learn the truth of your faith and live it.

  38. G says:

The best interpretation is “Condemn not, lest you be condemned”. No one should condemn anyone (God wants us all). However, it’s fine to judge on moral issues, that is, you need to judge morally if something is correct or not. It’s in prophecy that the Church will be inundated (infiltrated) but as the Bible says “the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” The people are the Church if they choose to be. These “nuns” are choosing not to be by their OWN actions. I wonder if these are the “men” in California that dress as nuns and then attend Mass and expect to receive communion.

  39. Peggy Clores says:

These orders(all congregated under the Leadership Conference of Women Religion) are entirely dissident and NOT Catholic. Period.

Authentically CATHOLIC Nuns shot back Immediately today opposing these dissidents WHO DO NOT REPRESENT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OR HER TEACHING.!! High praise for the Counsel of Major Superiors of Women Religious who represent 103 Communities for the following statement that flat out opposes the LCWR statement:

    Dear Friends,

Yesterday the LCWR (Leadership Conference of Women Religious) sent out a statement claiming that “Catholic nuns are urging Congress to pass President Barack Obama’s health care plan…” This statement directly contradicts the positions set forth by the Bishops, who have asked all Catholics to oppose the Senate health care bill due to its substantial moral flaws.

Attached is a statement issued today by the CMSWR (Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious) which represents over 103 communities and 10,000 members. The Council affirms their support of the authentic Catholic position, as announced by our Bishops, and rejects the statement of the LCWR.

I urge you to promote it far and wide so that the truth can be properly represented.

    March 17, 2010

In a March 15th statement, Cardinal Francis George, OMI, of Chicago, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, spoke on behalf of the United States Bishops in opposition to the Senate’s version of the health care legislation under consideration because of its expansion of abortion funding and its lack of adequate provision for conscience protection. Recent statements from groups like Network, the Catholic Health Association and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) directly oppose the Catholic Church’s position on critical issues of health care reform.

The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious, the second conference of Major Superiors of Women Religious in the United States, believes the Bishops’ position is the authentic teaching of the Catholic Church.

Protection of life and freedom of conscience are central to morally responsible judgment. We join the bishops in seeking ethically sound legislation.

  40. marjer says:

God forgive them, they know not what they are doing.

  41. Rita says:

Puh-leeze. This set of nuns are now job hunting for jobs in secular society, maybe even in politics. They have long ago excommunicated themselves from their vocation and the Church, and know very well that they are about be OFFICIALY excommunicated by Rome, along with the closing of their Catholic hospital, who are being forced to cooperate with evil, or close. They will close.

  42. Mary says:

There are not 59,000 nuns in exsistence who are in full communion with the Catholic Church, so this is a spin on the truth, as usual.

  43. Mark in Rockaway says:

To paraphrase Obi-Wan Kenobi, “These aren’t the nuns you’re looking for”.

  44. Leonard says:

Shame on these dissenters. How often they confuse the faithful and misrepresent the true teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ through His Church in order to fulfill their own confused agendas which actually assists satan’s plans. Repent…begin with humility…don the habits you once wore…practice obedience and understand that murdering pre-born children is not acceptable in God’s eyes!

  45. SunDancer2012 says:

These nuns may be Catholic in name, but only in name! They are renegade nuns! The same nuns that the Vatican is trying to reign in, but they won’t allow it. They are off somewhere is lala land doing their own thing. They are a disgrace to the Church and whatever they say and do should be discredited. These women are selfish and selfserving! They are not speaking for the Church, only for themselves.

  46. taad says:

If the “good” “sisters”, think they can go it alone, then we the laity can stop supporting the Annual Appeal for the Retired Religious that bishops take up for them. They just slapped the bishops in the face. They are no longer Catholic, so see if some of the Democrats from their religion of tolerance will feed them. I am done with them. Not another nickle will go to them.

  47. Theresa says:

All this is in God’s hands. The “Sisters” who are for the Health care bill are not in the truth, and social Justice is another word for liberal. I am poor myself, and cannot find a job. I don’t want the government control health care, nor my tax dollars funding abortions. If this bill goes through, it will change everything because taxes will go up so far that it will cause the economy to fail. Already two Senators in California, and in Colorado say if the Catholic church steps in they will make the church no longer tax exempt . We are all going go through it, and there is going to be a alot of civil unrest and socialism coming. These “Sister’s” are not thinking of the poor, but only promoting their own liberal agena. There is so much evil attached to this bill you can’t even imagine. There is going to be no health care at all, and greatly reduced help for the elderly, and people with disabilities. Anyone that has an illness will be eliminated. How does this help the poor, and the unborn?

  48. Kevin Nedd says:

    Dear Vicky (from #8)

I am Catholic; I am also a lector in my church; I support the current administration; and I strongly support this bill.

    Get over it.

  49. Mary says:

Don’t be fooled or swayed by these renegade nuns. A good example is Sr. Carol Keehan,
the CEO and President of Catholic HealthCare Association. After avowing she and her
organization would never support a bill that pays for abortion, she changed her mind and publicly endorsed Obama Care. Guess what, her annual salary is over $800,000.
Where’s the charity in the Daughters of Charity?

  50. Catherine Alexander says:

I’d like to know exactly WHICH “nuns” these are.

  51. Beeblockerson says:

God help them! I feel sorry for them and the people they deceive.
Back in the ’50’s even Planned Parenthood admitted abortion killed a baby.

    Tuesday March 16, 2010
Planned Parenthood 1952: Abortion ‘Kills the Life of a Baby,’ Danger to Moth

    By Peter J. Smith

WASHINGTON, DC, March 16, 2010 ( – It is an inconvenient fact.

According to a pamphlet unearthed by the pro-life group Live Action, back in 1952, Planned Parenthood – today the largest abortion provider in the United States – told women that having an abortion was a danger to their lives, health, and fertility, and kills a baby.

Live Action’s investigative journalists have uncovered the pamphlet from Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) that emphatically espoused an anti-abortion position, while explaining artificial birth control: “the use of medically approved methods to postpone pregnancy until you are ready for it.”

The booklet is entitled “Plan Your Children for Health and Happiness.” The copy scanned and posted on Live Action’s website indicates it was distributed through Planned Parenthood of Iowa and dated to October 1952.

The document’s “frequently asked questions” section on birth control asked, “Is it an abortion?”

“Definitely not,” Planned Parenthood said. “An abortion requires an operation. It kills the life of a baby after it has begun.”

“It is dangerous to your life and health. It may make you sterile so that when you want a child you cannot have it. Birth control merely postpones the beginning of life.”

The explanation appears to run at variance with Planned Parenthood’s current description of abortions prior to legalization in 1973 as dangerous due to illegality – rather than harmful in and of itself to both mother and unborn child.

“The scientific fact that an abortion ends the life of a living human being isn’t so convenient these days for Planned Parenthood,” remarked David R. Schmidt, Media Director for Live Action, in a post accompanying the revealed PPFA pamphlet.

“They sure had a more accurate understanding of science before their twisted abortion ideology of today took over.” attempted to reach PPFA for comment; however, calls were not returned by press time.

The PPFA document also reveals a shift in ideology over the intended consumers of birth control – rather than unmarried women, the pamphlet addressed women who wished to delay pregnancy until “you and your husband are well and able to take care of them.”

  52. D. says:

Here is one Catholic Nun who has it right:

    Mother Therese’s statements on abortion:
“”America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father’s role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts — a child — as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters” And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’sentitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign.” (Mother Theresa — “Notable and
    Quotable,” Wall Street Journal, 2/25/94, p. A14)

  53. Christopher says:

This is a nonsense story that tries to imply that all Nuns are against the US Bishops when in fact it is very very few Nuns that support this disgraceful bill.

The sheer lowness of using this way to try to manipulate people shows how desperate the Government has become.

I pray that under its current state this bill fails.

  54. Pravelon says:

Wow. Apparently a very deep nerve was hit in this story. Whatever happened to the idea that what happens at the College of Cardinals during an Ecumenical Council stays with the College of Cardinals after the Ecumenical Council, i.e., The U.S. is a secular nation that allows its citizens to presumably think for themselves.
