Christie backs Sotomayor
| Republican opposition to the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to a seat on the United States Supreme Court has been visible all week,
But not from Chris Christie. The party’s N.J. gubernatorial candidate said in a statement today:
“After watching and listening to Judge Sotomayor’s performance at the confirmation hearings this week, I am confident that she is qualified for the position of Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Elections have consequences. One of those consequences are judicial appointments. While Judge Sotomayor would not have been my choice, President Obama has used his opportunity to fill a seat on the Supreme Court by choosing a nominee who has more than proven her capability, competence and ability. I support her appointment to the Supreme Court and urge the Senate to keep politics out of the process and confirm her nomination.”

Come on Fred. First of all, there has been very little opposition to Sotomayor. Some of the senators expressing concern may vote for her. Is there really any doubt that she’ll be appointed?
Secondly, Christie’s opinion on the appointment is inconsequential. Perhaps his campaign thinks there are political points to be scored by expressing support. And I doubt that you’d further such an obvious tactic unless you were part of that campaign. Hey did Inglesino promise you a spot in a Christie administration if you shill for him?

The point is, there is no significant reason for publishing Christie’s support. It’s fluff. You don’t usually fall for that crap.
I noticed you didn’t deny an association with the campaign. Lieutenant governor is a strech. Press Secretary perhaps but be careful of Inglesino promises

Actually the conservative blogoshere is having a hissy fit. Even some of Christie’s rightwing supporters are distancing themselves from this announcement.
This is one of what I suspect will be several “Sister Souljah” moments for Chris Christie during the campaign as he seeks to distance himself from the Loneganista wing of the NJGOP and move to the political center before the general election. Bill Clinton did the same thing in 1992 when he “dissed” Jesse Jackson in his “Sister Souljah” speech.
Ken, you make my point. It’s not news, it;s campaign retoric and political posturing. Snowflack claims he’s reporting news.
If he’s reporting news he SHOULD have reported is the blogosphere noise. Fred needs to either quit his day job and work for Christie or disassociate from the Christie campaign

Well, you can’t do both. It short changes the paper’s readership. But I’m glad you think it’s a laughing matter.
Not sure which is worse, Ted and his off-the-wall comments, or Fred responding to someone who is obviously a few bricks short of a load.

Sorry Ted, I respect your opinion but this is news in the sense that it is a fact that voters can consider. The Record will of course support Christie when the time comes. They are as predictable as the sunrise but different people will have different reactions to Christies support of her. The Right will go nuts and that’s a good thing and the left will see it for what it is and that’s a good thing.
Well Dan, today’s (7/18) opinion piece, over which Fred has a major influence, agrees with me. I feel vindicated in my opinion that Christie’ s announcement isn’t news and embarassed regarding my comments regarding political bias. Sorry Fred
I agree with Dan. This statement from CC just shows us how he intends to pander to segments of the electorate in order to get their vote. It may not work as intended. I think New Jersey voters are a lot more sophisticated than he (and the rest of the GOP) think they are.
NOTE: For a change, it’s a relief to see Fred charging other than the Dems of being good at “simple politics.”
I also apologize for my redundant use of the word regarding. I’m not quite the editor that Fred is. But I’m good enough to know that Christie’s written announcement is grammatically incorrect. “This is a historic moment…” should read “This is AN historic moment”
