Getting dirty already

Check out this missive from Steve Lonegan:

Did State Senate Minority Executive Director Jim Harkness use taxpayers’ facilities, taxpayers’ equipment, and taxpayers’ time to prepare and send a political memo to the Christie for Governor campaign?

Harkness, in an email to the gubernatorial candidate, presumably Christie, argued that rival candidate Steve Lonegan will lose his public financing because he did not disclose his affiliation with the Americans for Prosperity Foundation, an anti-tax educational group.

“AFP will not reveal their donors. They are obviously conservatives who like ‘convenient” transparency,’ wrote Harkness a former Chief Counsel to Gov. Donald DiFrancesco, in a memo made public on “Lonegan will lose his public money,” Harkness claimed.

Harkness is a liberal insider who stifled numerous conservative legislative initiatives during his lengthy tenure working with State Senate Republicans.

A poster-boy for the revolving door of the Trenton grease machine – an employee of the legislature, then a lobbyist pushing special interests to the legislature, then an employee again.

Lonegan got caught in a lie and he is like a caged animal attacking with viscous statements but without any real affect. He is an embarrassment and he should get out of the race. Republicans cannot tolerate corruption and especially in the election process.

  3. Andy Bradshaw says:

    Due process?

Come on Ed, give Steve Lonegan the same due process Jim Harkness fought for on behalf of convicted murderers. Wait until someone makes a formal complaint, until ELEC investigates it, until the process has the opportunity to take its course. Let’s not lynch the guy just yet.

And as for tolerating corruption. Wasn’t it the GOP that changed the date of the primary election in 2001 just to give an advantage to their inside candidate? Is changing the law to suit yourself a kind of “legal” corruption? I think you could argue that it was in that case.

Order a nice bottle of Champagne this evening and save the bucket and ice. To get through this primary, we will all need to keep our heads cool.

  4. Ed Ramirez says:

All Lonegan has to do is get AFP to give the names of their donors, but he won’t be able to do that and he should lose the matching funds. I do not care who was corrupt in the past I just do not want a corrupt candidate at this time.

  5. Tony Lama says:

Ed sounds like a very angry man.

His problem with Lonegan is that Steve is a real Republican and if Ed lived anywhere other than Morris County, he would be a Democrat.

  6. Ed Ramirez says:

I joined the Republican Party in 1968 in the town of Los Angeles, Ca. hardly a bed rock Republican town. My family disowned me because they were all hard core Democrats. Just because you spout a bunch of slogans does not make you a good Republican. When a man like Lonegan begins a campaign by splitting hairs about who has contributed to his campaign, I see nothing but trouble in the future. I have little doubt that he used his connection with AFP to bring in cash so quickly. He needs to get out of the race and leave it to more honorable people. Oh and do not fear I am not all that angry.
