Tom Kean for Chris Christie

Former Gov. Thomas H. Kean endorsed the gubernatorial candidacy of Chris Christie today at a press conference in Bernardsville.

Christie recalled how as a 14-year-old in Livingston, he knocked on Kean’s front door and volunteered to work on his 1977 gubernatorial campaign. Kean lost that one, but he won in both 1981 and 1985.

“It isn’t every day that a 14-year-old knocks on your door and volunteers to help your campaign for governor,” Kean said.

He called Christie an extraordinary person with an extraordinary record.

Kean normally stays out of primaries, so in the world of Republican politics, his endorsement carries some weight.

Kean is a moderate Republican, which, of course, is the only type who can get elected in New Jersey. It may irritate the right wing, but any move to the political center by Christie would be to his advantage.

A moderate Repub is the only one that can be elected? I would not call Joe Pennacchio a “moderate Republican!” He does a FINE job as a true republican.
